(Yicai Global) Nov. 29 -- Chengdu, capital of China's western Sichuan province, is to build a 677-meter-tall skyscraper based around the theme of pandas, which will constitute the tallest building in China, second only globally to the 828-meter-tall record-holder, the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai, local media outlet Chengdu Commercial Daily reported yesterday.

The 632-meter-tall Shanghai Tower currently holds the record of China's tallest building.

Property developer China Overseas Property Group Ltd will undertake the project located in the northwest of the city, and it will also construct commercial facilities nearby. The project is scheduled to commence at the end of 2018 or beginning of 2019, and will take six years.

The Chengdu Municipal Government requires the designer focus on a panda theme in by integrating panda elements and relevant cultural aspects into the design scheme. Once completed, the developer will be tasked with attracting at least five global headquarters or southwestern headquarters of enterprises to the building.
