(Yicai Global) March 19 – China's smart television market penetration will reach 90 percent in 2020 amid a government push to promote the use of artificial intelligence in home appliances and other fields, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology says.
Voice-interaction AI technology could play an integral role in the development of the smart TV sector, Xinhua News Agency reported the MIIT as saying, adding that AI systems will bring in earnings of more than USD47 billion for home appliance companies globally by 2020, the report said.
"If remote controls changed the way people interacted with televisions decades ago, AI will now make them more user-friendly. It can not only understand what you say, but also knows what you want before you speak," said Robin Li, founder of Beijing-based internet heavyweight Baidu Inc. Baidu has recently started working with Shenzhen-based Skyworth Digital Holdings Co. to bring together Big Data and AI technologies to develop intelligence TVs.
The MIIT aims to support the adoption of intelligent sensors, Internet of Things, and machine learning technologies in smart home products, especially smart TVs, to improve the level of intelligence, practicality, and security. It will also build a number of smart home test evaluation and demonstration projects.
