China's Customs Seize 276 Tons of Radioactive Manganese Ore China's Customs Seize 276 Tons of Radioactive Manganese Ore

(Yicai Global) Jan. 3 -- China's customs have confiscated a large batch of dangerously radioactive manganese ore with the estimated value of CNY4.14 million (USD594,300) in northeastern Liaoning province.

Dalian's customs department has isolated the 276-ton shipment, coming from Mozambique, and is preparing to send the hazardous material back, Xinhua News Agency reported today, without disclosing the trading party's identity.

Manganese ore is used in smelting steel. In 2018, China imported 27.7 million tons of the chemical element, an increase of 30 percent from a year earlier. The biggest trading partner was South Africa, making up nearly 41 percent of the total.
