China’s Express Parcel Volume Jumped 53% Over National Day Holiday China’s Express Parcel Volume Jumped 53% Over National Day Holiday

(Yicai Global) Oct. 9 -- China's express parcel volume soared 53 percent during the week-long National Day holiday.

Express couriers collected 1.82 billion parcels between Oct. 1 and yesterday, according to statistics released by the State Post Bureau today. They delivered 1.8 billion over the same period, up almost 63 percent from a year earlier.

National Day fell on the same day as the Mid-Autumn Festival this year, boosting shipments of specialty products. That was the main reason for the jump in volume, the bureau said. The accelerated linkage of online and offline services also contributed, it said, adding that the sector’s annual rate of growth is over 30 percent.

China's effective containment of the coronavirus also strengthened consumer confidence. Online sales of foodstuffs, daily necessities, computers, communication and consumer electronics boomed over the vacation.

In addition, the improvement of rural online express service capacity and urban express terminal service efficiency is also an important reason for the rapid expansion of the express delivery business, the bureau said.

The country's express couriers sent their 50 billionth parcel of the year on Sept. 10, reaching the milestone much earlier than in previous years as the pandemic spurred online demand. Last year, that figure was only reached by early November.
