China's Food Drivers Get Paid 22% More After Virus-Hit Spring Festival China's Food Drivers Get Paid 22% More After Virus-Hit Spring Festival

(Yicai Global) Feb. 19 -- The salaries of Chinese logistics staff, including takeaway food couriers, rose by much more than those of other sectors after the Chinese New Year holiday ended because the new coronavirus outbreak has spurred increasing demand.

In the period from Feb. 3 to Feb. 12, the monthly salary of food delivery staff jumped by almost 22 percent to CNY7,056 (USD1,008) from a year earlier, career development site 58.Com said in a report published today.

Amid the epidemic, many workers have been homebound so online grocery stores and pre-packaged meal producers have been busy fulfilling the rising numbers of orders.

Supply chain managers were also increasingly sought after as their pay jumped by nearly 30 percent. That of cargo drivers rose by more than 23 percent. Distribution sorting jobs paid over 9 percent more.

The country's average salaries climbed 5.8 percent to CNY6,420 over the same period. Information technology, transport, and delivery led the increases while the fields of entertainment, education, retail, and catering fell the most. Waiters' salaries dropped by over 9 percent.

IT workers got paid more than 22 percent better now as the outbreak has prompted firms to move more operations online. Among them, algorithm engineers and research & development engineers enjoyed an up to 40 percent raise.

Manufacturing workers received CNY5,197 on average, up nearly 10 percent from a year earlier, as many factories were looking to boost output to meet demand.
