China's Guangdong Earmarks Land for Super-Fast Shanghai-Guangzhou Bullet Train China's Guangdong Earmarks Land for Super-Fast Shanghai-Guangzhou Bullet Train

(Yicai Global) Feb. 22 – Southern China's Guangdong province has revealed its plans to build the first super-fast maglev train route between eastern Shanghai and southern Guangzhou.

The province will reserve land for the project, as well as for another one between Beijing, Hong Kong and Macau, the regional government said in its 2020-2035 development plan issued recently.

The Shanghai-Guangzhou line would go through Shenzhen. The southeastern tech hub is about 1,500 kilometers away from the eastern metropolis and with a maximum maglev speed of 600 km per hour, the journey would take about two and a half hours, about half of that of existing high-speed train routes.

China has the biggest number and the longest mileage of low and medium-speed maglev train routes in the world, according to a report by Guosheng Securities. However, most of those are for short journeys between cities such as Shanghai and Hangzhou.

In November 2019, Shenzhen's administration was looking to start studying the feasibility of a maglev train route to Guangzhou, a major city about 110 km away. The line might further lead to the special administrative region of Hong Kong.
