(Yicai Global) Sep. 1 -- Chinese budget hotel chain Hanting Hotel plans to quadruple the number of hostels it operates to 10,000 by 2028, two years ahead of schedule, the firm’s chief executive officer said today.

The firm, which is run by Shanghai-based Huazhu Hotels Group, will increase the number of hotels to 5,000 in the next two to three years and to 10,000 by 2028, Xu Haochun said. The company had said in July that it would reach its target of 10,000 hotels by 2030.

"Hanting has about 2,600 hotels in 367 cities nationwide and will expand at a rate of 800 hotels a year," Xu said. Sixty percent of the hotels that the company has opened recently have been situated in third-, fourth- and fifth-tier cities near county governments, hospitals and commercial streets, he added.

Hanting will expand by absorbing a number of existing privately-run establishments that are struggling to continue amid the Covid-19 outbreak. Hotel chains are seen as having stronger management, and as a result, better epidemic control and prevention measures, the Beijing Business Today reported, citing industry insiders. Therefore many independent hotels want to join hotel groups to mitigate their risk, it added.

Another feature spurring expansion is growing brand awareness in lower tier cities, prompting privately-run hotels to join hotel chains.

Hanting has around 140 million registered members and receives about 80 million guests a year.
