(Yicai Global) Sept. 13 -- On Wednesday, Zhi Shuping, Director of The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) of China, debunked rumors of China banning moldy European cheese, saying that the AQSIQ hasn't issued any such ban. Zhi Shuping, director of the AQSIQ, confirmed at a press conference held today that there was no such ban.

Some media reports claimed China has imposed a full ban on the import of moldy cured cheese mainly from France and Italy, much to the anguish of cheese-loving foreigners who now live in China. The cause of the rumored ban is reportedly mold colonies, such as blue mold, found in the imported blue cheese, which are not allowed to be imported.

Some consumers have made a complaint to China Consumers Association, voicing concerns over the quality of such cheese products, and the AQSIQ is looking into the issue, Zhi Shuping said during the press conference.

"At present, there is no such ban. If sensitive substances are found in our investigation, we will strictly control them. The findings will be released on the AQSIQ website," Zhi declared.

"We haven't received any documents banning the import of French and Italian cheese," said an official of the "Xinjiang Entry Exit Inspection and Quarantine Portal," who was present at the press conference.

Under China's Food Safety Law, the safety of imported and exported food is monitored and managed by China's entry exit inspection and quarantine authorities.
