(Yicai Global) Dec. 22-- Ningbo Orient Wires & Cables will provide cables worth GBP9.14 million (USD12.27 million) to an undersea electricity transmission project in Scotland, the company announced yesterday.

Orient Wires & Cables will supply the submarine cable products to Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks in the country’s Outer Hebrides, or Western Isles, the Chinese provider of cable design, manufacturing and installation services said in its statement, which cited the bid-winning notice. The project will link the two islands of Skye and Harris to guarantee the electricity demand of nearly 20,000 households on these islands. The products are to be delivered next year.

This is the first submarine cable project the company based in the port of Ningbo in China’s southeastern Zhejiang province has ever won in Europe.

Orient Wires & Cables shares [SHA:603606] were trading up 0.63 percent at CNY24.10 (USD3.7) in midmorning after retreating from earlier highs.

Project owner SSEN is a unit of SSE, formerly Scottish and Southern Energy, which is based in Perth. The parent, among the six giants of the UK energy sector, mainly operates natural gas and telecommunications networks, but also supplies other energy types, per the statement. SSE's stock [LON:SSE] closed 1.48 percent up at GBP1,460 (USD1,960) yesterday.

The deal will bolster the company’s collaboration with global mainstream electricity suppliers and overseas general contractors, accelerate its exploration of the international market and help consolidate its lead in the undersea cable market, the statement added.
