China Punishes Tencent for Pornographic, Vulgar Content on WeSing App China Punishes Tencent for Pornographic, Vulgar Content on WeSing App

(Yicai Global) Nov. 16 -- Chinese regulators have penalized internet giant Tencent Holdings for pornographic and vulgar content on its WeSing app.

WeSing operator Tencent Music Entertainment Shenzhen was fined the maximum amount and had its illegal gains confiscated after regulators summoned parent company Tencent over the unsavory content, the National Office Against Pornography and Illegal Publications said in a statement posted on its website today. It did not disclose the amount.

Tencent must carry out a 30-day “rectification” of the app, ban the illegal accounts and karaoke rooms involved, immediately shut off the in-site search function in the youth mode, and improve the security mechanism and product functions in the that mode, the statement added.

The platform had some dance videos with obvious sexual innuendo and songs with clear pornographic and vulgar content. Some accounts led to porn sites. The app’s youth mode did not play its due role, and pornographic and vulgar information could still be searched for using it.

The Shenzhen Nanshan District Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism Bureau imposed the punishment on Oct. 29, the statement said. In addition, the Guangdong Provincial Office Against Pornography and Illegal Publications and the Provincial Cyberspace Administration met with Tencent on Oct. 28 and ordered a comprehensive rectification.
