China Removes TripAdvisor, 104 Other Apps From Stores for Illegal Content China Removes TripAdvisor, 104 Other Apps From Stores for Illegal Content

(Yicai Global) Dec. 8 -- China’s internet regulator has ordered the country’s app stores to remove TripAdvisor and 104 other mobile apps because they carry pornographic, violent, and other illegal information.

The move is a result of the campaign to clean up internet content the Cyberspace Administration of China launched last month. Other platforms to face the chop include dating tools Sugar and Mask Park, live-streaming apps Huazi and Xiangse, as well as comic and novel apps.

Apart from pornography and violence, some of the offenders provided illegal services such as gambling and prostitution, the watchdog said in a statement posted on its website today, without giving details as to why each app was to be expunged.

US-based travel platform TripAdvisor has been deleted from the Apple and Android app stores in China, along with the other platforms. The CAC also ordered eight app stores, including Fast Download, New Vision, and Win Family, to halt downloads because they failed to examine the apps per requirements.

The administration said it will continue to regulate mobile apps and remove any offenders.
