China’s Renren Video Is Pulled From Apple’s App Store as Platform Fixes Copyright Issues China’s Renren Video Is Pulled From Apple’s App Store as Platform Fixes Copyright Issues

(Yicai Global) June 7 -- Renren Video, a Chinese video-sharing platform featuring Western movies and television shows, was removed from Apple's App Store yesterday as the platform takes steps to remedy problematic content.

The app’s Kuaikan, or ‘quick view,’ video clip section has been suspended to deal with illegal content and related accounts, in accordance with the law, according to an in-app notice. Kuaikan clips summarize movies and TV episodes into just a few minutes.

In April, more than 70 video-streaming platforms in China, including iQiyi, Tencent Videos, Youku and Mango TV, jointly called on short video platforms and social media account operators to respect original content, protect copyright and stop the unauthorized editing, uploading and disseminating of movies and TV shows. Renren Video’s disappearance is possibly connected with that.

Renren Video, which is China's fifth-largest online video platform, has been punished several times before for violating administrative provisions covering internet program services. In January last year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also told domestic app stores to pull the app due to its failure to make required changes.

Renren Video has 160 million registered users and average monthly active users of more than 40 million. It has held six funding rounds since 2015, with participants such as Baidu and Xiaomi, according to corporate information platform Tianyancha.

Last year the company relocated its main operations from Shanghai to Chongqing, as Chairman Zhou Weimin unveiled a plan to use a firm in that city as a listing entity for a domestic or overseas initial public offering.
