China to Set up Strategic Plans for Biodiversity Protection China to Set up Strategic Plans for Biodiversity Protection

(Yicai Global) May 22 -- China will set up new strategic plans to include biodiversity protection into its agriculture, forestry, water conservancy, infrastructure construction and finance laws.

This was the message Li Ganjie, the head of the country's Ministry of Ecology and Environment, brought from Beijing to the Campaign for International Day for Biological Diversity in China's southeastern Jiangxi province today.

The ministry will survey, observe and evaluate biodiversity status in making the plan, which will focus on the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the integrated Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Economic area, Xishuangbanna Tropical Rainforest in China's southwestern Yunnan province, and Daxing'anling, China's northernmost prefecture, which lies in northeastern Heilongjiang province, as well as important species and genetic resources of great public concern, per the ministry.

China is one of the world's most biologically diverse countries and the one facing the greatest threat to its proliferation of species. The plan will help to improve the laws, regulations and standards for biodiversity protection, and clarify the responsibilities of subjects and regulators, Li added.

The pressures on species diversity mainly comes from natural environment change, resource overuse, pollution, invasive species and climate change. The last one will be a major menace to biodiversity by 2050, the ministry said.
