China’s Urban Jobless Rate Is Back to Pre-Pandemic Levels, Official Says China’s Urban Jobless Rate Is Back to Pre-Pandemic Levels, Official Says

(Yicai Global) Oct. 27 -- China’s urban unemployment rate in the third quarter was almost the same as that in the same period in 2019, marking a return to pre-Covid-19 levels, an official at the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said today.

The country’s jobless rate stood at 5 percent in the three months ended Sept. 30, it said. Some 10.5 million people found jobs in cities in the first nine months, a 16 percent jump from the same period last year.

The employment situation is stable and recovery in the third quarter was better than expected, said Song Xin, deputy head of the ministry’s department of employment promotion. Both college graduates and migrant workers have been able to find jobs on the whole.

Employment levels are expected to remain steady but there remain uncertainties due to the unpredictable international environment and uneven domestic economic recovery, he said.

The ministry will provide one-to-one assistance to those graduates having difficulty finding jobs and those who have been unemployed for a long time, it said. It will step up efforts to help vulnerable groups to ensure that at least one member of every household has a job.
