China’s Urban Jobless Rate Was Steady in First Quarter, Official Says China’s Urban Jobless Rate Was Steady in First Quarter, Official Says

(Yicai Global) April 28 -- China’s surveyed urban unemployment was basically unchanged in the first quarter of the year despite the impact of Covid-19 and the international situation, according to an official at the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.

The jobless rate averaged 5.5 percent in the three months ended March 31, up from 5.4 percent a year earlier, data the National Bureau of Statistics released on April 18 showed

Some 2.85 million new jobs were created in the quarter, achieving 26 percent of this year’s target, Chen Yongjia, deputy director of the ministry’s employment promotion department, said at a press conference yesterday.

China will prioritize jobs for college graduates in its employment efforts, Chen said, as 10.76 million will graduate this year, a new record high.

The ministry will spare no effort to help businesses to steadily take on more workers and allow some firms in difficulty to postpone payment of social insurance premiums, he said.

The ministry also unveiled a list of the top 100 occupations that had more vacancies than applicants in the first quarter. Waiters, deliverymen, and home helps ranked among the top 10.

China’s social insurance net is covering more and more people, Lu Aihong, director of the ministry’s policy research department, said yesterday, adding that over 1 billion people had participated in basic endowment insurance, as of the end of last month.

The balance of the basic endowment, unemployment, and work-related injury insurance funds was nearly CNY7.2 trillion (USD1.1 trillion) at the close of March.
