(Yicai Global) Jan. 22 -- China used 6.3 trillion kilowatt hours of electricity last year, reflecting the strength of the country's economy, National Development and Reform Commission spokesman Yan Pengcheng said today.

Power consumption rose 6.6 percent annually, making a 1.6 percentage point increase over the previous year, Yan said.

Primary and secondary industries' consumption climbed 7.3 percent and 6.6 percent, up 2.0 and 2.7 percentage points, respectively. The tertiary industry and residential usage surged 10.7 percent and 7.8 percent, down 0.6 and 3.1 percentage points, respectively.

Secondary industry power consumption expansion accounted for 60 percent of the total increase.

The amount of power China generated went up 6.5 percent last year, while thermal generation rose 5.2 percent. Clean production rose 10 percent.

Hydropower, nuclear power, wind power and solar energy posted increases of 1.7 percent, 17 percent, 26 percent and 75 percent, respectively.

The Chinese government and enterprises actively promoted market-based electricity trading last year. Such deals covered 1.63 trillion kilowatt hours, up 45 percent.

China's gross domestic product was CNY82.7 trillion (USD12.9 trillion) last year, marking a rice of 6.9 percent, China National Bureau of Statistics said last week.
