China's Waigaoqiao Launches Two Offshore Rigs Bound for Qatargas China's Waigaoqiao Launches Two Offshore Rigs Bound for Qatargas

(Yicai Global) Dec. 4 -- Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding delivered two offshore oil rigs today.

These structures will soon move to Qatar to drill wells for Qatargas, the world's largest liquefied natural gas company, The Paper reported.

Waigaoqiao customized the platforms for Northern Offshore, the US drilling contractor under Shandong Marine Group.

Both drilling rigs can operate under severe oceanic conditions and have sector-leading overall performance, per the report, which noted one platform's maximum working depth is 375 feet (about 114 meters), while the other's goes beyond 400 feet (around 122 meters). Their upper structures can house 120 and 150 roustabouts, respectively.

Waigaoqiao penned the agreement for construction of the rigs with Jinan-based Shandong Marine Group in 2014 in the first project the pair have collaboratively developed for petroleum and gas exploration in countries along the Belt and Road.

The two also struck a deal for Waigaoqiao to build 10 180,000-ton bulk cargo carriers last year in the most valuable contract between Chinese shipbuilders and transport firms last year.

LNG is natural gas condensed and cooled to a liquid form for more flexible transport than pipe-line based natural gas.
