(Yicai Global) Jan. 4 -- China's yuan appreciated to its firmest level against the US dollar since June 2018 today.

The yuan started onshore at 6.5198 versus the greenback this morning. Shortly, it reached 6.4684, the strongest in 30 months and a more than 700 basis point difference from the last trading day.

Offshore, the renminbi began at 6.4922 and soon strengthened to 6.4453, about 500 basis points firmer from Dec. 31.
