China's BYD Denies EV Started Fire in 4S Store in Fuzhou China's BYD Denies EV Started Fire in 4S Store in Fuzhou

(Yicai) May 17 -- BYD said the fire at the Chinese car and battery giant's 4S, or Sale, Spare parts, Service and Survey, outlet in Fuzhou was not caused by its electric vehicle.

A video shows that the fire started on the second floor, potentially caused by a short circuit or aging wires, the Shenzhen-based firm said on social media late yesterday. There was no open flame in the glass exhibition hall on the first floor, it added.

The burning object was an EV parked in the exhibition hall of the shop, the fire department of Fuzhou told Yicai. BYD clarified that this does not mean that the vehicle was the source of the fire.

Background data shows no abnormalities in the batteries of the EVs parked in the showroom, making the burned car an unlikely cause of the fire, BYD noted. The company will further cooperate with the authorities in the investigation, it said.
