Chinese Developers Are Eager to Go Global, Google China President Says Chinese Developers Are Eager to Go Global, Google China President Says

(Yicai) Aug. 12 -- The enthusiasm of Chinese developers for going global has intensified, according to US tech giant Google's president for China.

"This year, everyone is eager to understand what 'going overseas' means and how to do it," Stanley Chen told Yicai during the 2024 Google I/O Connect in Beijing on Aug. 7.

"How to understand overseas users' pain points, differentiate themselves from others, and communicate the brand value in the long term are the three main questions Chinese firms asked me the most this year," Chen said.

Chinese companies going global are no longer solely relying on price advantages but also innovative products, he noted. However, they also face many challenges overseas, such as meeting talent demand, privacy protection, and understanding different cultures.

For example, Chen explained that the European market pays more attention to environmental protection, sustainable development, and user data privacy, so Chinese companies need to increase their understanding of these fields before entering the European market.

Developers from China using Google's development tools rank among the top three by number for most tools, with some of them even ranking first, Chen said. "This is also why we will continue to help support Chinese developers."

About the artificial intelligence frenzy, Chen noted that Chinese companies have developed many new applications, but they are still in the early stages. One or two more years will likely be needed for more applications to emerge, he added.

Chen also said he is optimistic about Chinese startups because he believes the AI wave will promote the rise of a new generation of young developers and, possibly, new entrepreneurs.
