(Yicai Global) Aug. 14 -- Shares of Huya climbed after the Chinese e-sports streaming platform reported strong second-quarter earnings driven by higher demand for paid premium services.

Huya's stock price [NYSE:HUYA] rose 4.5 percent to close at USD21.33 in New York yesterday. The Guangzhou-based company's shares have gained 48 percent from a 52-week low in December. 

Net profit jumped 62 percent from a year earlier to USD25 million in the three months through June, Huya said in an earnings report yesterday. Revenue almost doubled to USD290 million. Income from Huya's main business of content live streaming surged 94 percent to USD280 million, with the rest coming from ads and other business lines, which gained 91 percent.

Backed by the world's largest gaming company Tencent Holdings, Huya has benefited from a deeper level of support from its investor, Chief Executive Dong Rongjie said, enabling it to further tap the potential of the e-sports industry chain. Huya's mobile strategy has also delivered good results, he added.

The number of gamers paying for Huya's premium services rose 47 percent to 4.9 million. Monthly active users rose 57 percent to 144 million, while those using the platform's mobile app jumped 31 percent to 56 million.

Rival live-streamer Douyu swung into the black in the quarter. It post a net profit of USD3.4 million yesterday compared with a loss of CNY229 million (USD33 million) a year earlier. Revenue more than doubled to USD273 million.

But shares of Douyu [NASDAQ:DOYU], which debuted in the US last month, slumped 11 percent to USD8.80 yesterday.

Both Huya and Douyu are funded by Tencent. Shenzhen-based Tencent had a 31.5 percent stake in Huya and 43.1 of Douyu as of the end of the first quarter.
