(Yicai Global) Jan. 11 -- Shares traded in the Chinese mainland closed lower on the first day of the new week after touching multi-year highs in the morning.

The Shanghai Composite Index fell 1.08 percent to 3,531.50, walking back from 3,597.70, its highest since December 2015, while the Shenzhen Component Index lost 1.33 percent to 15,115.38 after reaching 15,420.68, the highest since June 2015.

The ChiNext Price Index, which tracks growth stocks in Shenzhen, fell 1.84 percent to close at 3,092.86. It had reached 3,159.59 in intraday trading, the most since June 2015.

The Star 50 Index, which has lagged recent market gains, bucked the trend to gain 0.86 percent to 1,390.66. Unlike its peers, the benchmark that tracks tech stocks listed on Shanghai’s Nasdaq-like Star Market is well below its record high of 1,726.19 set last July.
