(Yicai) March 11 -- The micro- and mini-light emitting diode (MLED) project of Chinese display panel giant BOE Technology Group in Zhuhai, China’s southern Guangdong province, has officially kicked off mass production.
The first MLED display rolled out BOE’s Zhuhai production line yesterday, the Beijing-based company announced at an inauguration ceremony held on the same day. The plant has a monthly output of tens of thousands square meters of MLED display modules.
MLED displays are one of BOE’s main products, Wang Xiping, executive vice president and chief operating officer of BOE, told Yicai, adding that he hopes the mass production of the Zhuhai project can promote the company’s MLED business’ industrial ecology and global expansion.
BOE hopes to continue to enhance the market competitiveness of its MLED products with better image quality, lower power consumption, and simpler installation, Liu Yi, vice president of BOE and chief executive officer of its MLED business, told Yicai.
The application of MLED displays is in a rapid development stage, with uses in commercial and consumer electronics display products, Liu said. The annual compound growth rate of the MLED display market neared 10 percent in recent years.
The government’s introduction of direct subsidies for household appliance purchases has stimulated the rapid growth of the mini-LED backlight television market, Liu noted, adding that mini-LED screens have also become popular in the new energy vehicle and e-sports markets.
Moreover, the continuous upgrade of the display quality of MLED screens to 4K or even 8K from 2K has increased the applications of such products in the field of commercial displays, Liu pointed out.
BOE is also actively promoting the use of MLED screens as projection screens in theaters.
The cost of MLED screens decreased, so more and more cinemas will likely replace traditional projection screens with MLED display screens to bring new consumption patterns to the audience, Dai Yun, general manager of BOE’s partner Shanghai Film Group, told Yicai.
Theaters with MLED screens can also be used for livestreaming concerts, sports matches, and e-sports tournaments, Dai explained.
