Chinese Phone Accessory Maker Pisen Electronics Sues Apple Over MFi Licensing Program Chinese Phone Accessory Maker Pisen Electronics Sues Apple Over MFi Licensing Program

(Yicai Global) Aug. 29 -- Guangdong Pisen Electronics Co., a Chinese manufacturer of mobile phone accessories, said yesterday on Weibo that it has filed a suit against Apple Inc. [NASDAQ:AAPL] as the latter's MFi (Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad) licensing program is suspected of creating a monopoly. The case has been accepted by the Beijing Intellectual Property Court.

Pisen Electronics believes that MFi certification does not improve product safety and restricts fair competition in the Apple accessories market. Pisen Electronics hopes that Apple will end the monopoly and demands compensation of USD0.15 (CNY1) in economic losses.

MFi-licensed items, such as game controllers and magnetic charging modules, can display certain MFi-related logos on product packaging. Peripherals that have not passed MFi certification tests may not work after users upgrade their iOS system, Techweb reported.

Under the MFi scheme, Apple has authorized approximately 900 accessory makers. Some 700 are from China, but Pisen Electronics is not among them, Apple data form the end of last year show.

Zhao Guocheng, chairman of Pisen Electronics, published the Beijing Intellectual Property Court's Notice of Acceptance for the case on his WeChat today. "Apple is one of the world's greatest companies, but great business shall not harm the interests of consumers," he said.
