(Yicai Global) July 26 -- Police in China said they have cracked a counterfeit drug case, seizing over six tons of fake finished and semi-finished treatments, including folic acid for pregnant women and anti-rheumatic capsules for the elderly.

The on-site inspection uncovered the bogus medications and raw materials in a case that involved more than CNY14 million (USD2 million) in illegal income, China Consumer Journal also reported today.

Police ferreted out three counterfeit drugs in a clinic at the town of Wenfeng in Jishui in east-central Jiangxi province on Jan. 30. They traced them to Zhengzhou, capital of eastern Henan province, from where they had been shipped via mail. The case's task force narrowed the list of suspects down to a man surnamed Wang on June 24.

The revelation follows yesterday's news of the arrest of 15 persons in a scandal involving substandard rabies vaccine, including the chairwoman of Changsheng Bio-Technology, the drugmaker implicated in the falsification of the drug's data, in a case that has hammered China's biotech stocks and prompted Premier Li Keqiang to urge harsh punishments be meted out to drug counterfeiters.

In the case reported today, officers from the Jishui police force swooped in on a drug-making workshop in Xingyang city, Henan on July 8, and arrested two suspects at the scene both surnamed Wang. The police seized equipment, bogus finished and semi-finished drugs and raw materials.

Police escorted the suspects to Jishui and also transported the drugs and raw materials to Jiangxi. The case is still under investigation.
