(Yicai) Nov. 7 -- US chip giant Qualcomm has been deepening its cooperation with Chinese partners through the China International Import Expo since 2018, boosting development in areas such as fifth-generation communications technology, according to Meng Pu, chairman of Qualcomm China.

In the past few years, Qualcomm and its Chinese partners have jointly promoted the expansion of 5G tech from cellphones to automobiles, robots, extended reality, the Internet of Things, and the industrial internet through a series of projects, including the 5G Pilot Project, helping more firms expand in domestic and overseas markets, Meng said in an interview with Yicai on Nov. 5.

Qualcomm launched the 5G Pilot Project with its industrial chain partners in China in 2018, aiming to help Chinese-made 5G smartphones gain global market share, he noted. Qualcomm exhibited its first-generation mobile test platform for 5G devices at the first CIIE in 2018, helping Chinese manufacturers complete pre-commercial 5G testing.

As 5G entered its commercial era, Qualcomm displayed a series of 5G tech-based applications at the subsequent CIIEs. In 2021, it showcased the Lynk & Co 09, an intelligent sports utility vehicle jointly developed by Qualcomm and Chinese auto giant Geely Holding Group. Last year, Qualcomm built a virtual reality experience park integrating 5G, artificial intelligence, and extended reality technologies at the trade fair.

At this year’s expo, Qualcomm is exhibiting mobile and personal computer platforms based on its latest Snapdragon chip, which are integrated with AI-based large language models from Chinese vendors.

Generative AI will revolutionize the entire internet industry and business model, Meng noted, adding that working out how to apply LLMs in the cloud to mobile terminal devices will be the key for generative AI to achieve a wider range of applications.

In the coming years, Qualcomm will continue to exhibit its latest technologies and products at the CIIE and expand its partnership with Chinese firms to drive the development of 5G, AI, and intelligent vehicles, Meng added.
