(Yicai Global) July 6 -- The construction of the longest submarine tunnel in the world, the Island & Tunnel project connected to the mega-size sea-crossing, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, has been completed. With the offshore construction of the Island & Tunnel Project coming to an end, the main parts of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge will be wholly connected.

The completion ceremony for the world's longest submarine tunnel will be held at the construction site on July 7, Yangcheng Evening News reported. As the main bridge of the mega sea-crossing that consists of a series of bridges has been operational since last September, the completion of the submarine tunnel means the accomplishment of the Bridge's principle part construction.

All the remaining work related to the submarine tunnel now only involves internal construction, and the Bridge can open to traffic by the end of the year, revealed Yin Haiqing, deputy general manager of the Island & Tunnel Project of Hong Kong-ZhuHai-Macao Bridge of China Communications Construction Co.

With a total length of about 50 kilometers, the Hong Kong-ZhuHai-Macao Bridge is the longest cross-sea bridge in the world. The bridge connecting Hong Kong, Macao, and Zhuhai and situated over the waters of Lingdingyang channel of Pearl River Estuary, has a submarine tunnel stretching about seven kilometers.
