Coronavirus Casts a Pall Over New Year Celebrations in a Small Chinese Town Coronavirus Casts a Pall Over New Year Celebrations in a Small Chinese Town

(Yicai Global) Jan. 29 -- A small town in northern Shanxi province, some 1,000 kilometers away from the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, has welcomed in the Lunar New Year in a quiet and respectful way as it does its part to control the spread of the deadly pneumonia.

Normally the Spring Festival holiday in Shouyang County is a riotous time of year with children playing outside and fireworks exploding. This year the streets are empty and disease prevention teams monitor the movement of people into and out of the village.

The streets are deserted in Shouyang County yesterday, the fourth day after Chinese New Year. Normally they would be crowded with cars as people head out to visit relatives and friends.

The town's scenic spots are almost empty. The few people visiting on Jan. 27 wear masks.

Those who do venture out cover up with masks and scarfs.

A disease prevention worker asks a village resident to record his details before leaving the town.

A resident from another town is asked to sign in the book on entering the village. All are willing to co-operate with the disease prevention efforts.
