(Yicai Global) May 22 -- The mother of a famous Chinese rooftopper who fell to his death from a 62-storey skyscraper has won her legal battle against a video-streaming site in a pioneering case that sets the moral boundaries between online service providers and their clients. 

The Beijing Internet Court ordered Mijing Hefeng Technology, which runs the Huajiao video platform, to pay Wu Yongning's mother CNY30,000 (USD4,340) as compensation because the firm neglected its obligations to guarantee the safety of internet users, the Beijing Youth Daily reported today.

The 26-year-old martial arts enthusiast died in November 2017 while climbing the Huayuan Hua Centre, one of the tallest buildings in the city of Changsha.

Wu garnered millions of fans with videos of his daredevil climbing stunts posted on various platforms, with the last one promising CNY100,000 (USD15,000) in prize money, his family told the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald earlier. No details were provided about who offered the prize.

Huajiao just thought about making a profit, Wu's mother told the Beijing Youth Daily. This is why the platform should take responsibility, she said, adding that the Beijing-based company did not warn her son despite knowing that his stunts were dangerous.

Huajiao said it only provides storage space for content uploaders, adding the content of Wu's videos was not illegal so the platform was not liable. 

But the court ruled that since Huajiao benefits from the profitability of these videos, it was also responsible for Wu's safety. The two parties have not yet appealed the decision. 

The Beijing Internet Court accepted its first case last year. It aims to bring justice to those harmed by the movers and shakers of China's sprawling internet scene.
