Chinese Watchdog Slams Quiz Show for Hong Kong, Taiwan 'Country' Gaffe Chinese Watchdog Slams Quiz Show for Hong Kong, Taiwan 'Country' Gaffe

(Yicai Global) Jan. 14 -- The Cyberspace Administration of China has upbraided the directors of a live-streamed game show for labeling Hong Kong and Taiwan as countries just days after Marriot International Inc. was excoriated across China in the wake of a scolding from the regulator for the same offence.

The Baiwan Yingjia show, which is presented through live-streaming platform Huajiao's mobile application, allows users to answer questions for prize money. It made the gaffe on Jan. 13 when asking which country Hong Kong movie star Joey Wong lives in, state-owned China News Service reported.

China has been on the warpath against companies making errors about its sovereign territory. Delta Air Lines Inc. and fashion brand Zara, run by Industria de Diseno Textil SA, or Inditex, have also come into the crosshairs for similar reasons. China views Taiwan as a renegade province and Tibet as an autonomous region. Hong Kong and Taiwan are special administrative regions.

The CAC told Huajiao to immediately rectify the issue and provide internet services in accordance with the law. It will pass a second judgment after Huajiao makes changes.

Marriot was reprimanded after listing Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Tibet as countries in a survey sent to members. The CAC forced the US company to close its Mandarin website and mobile app for a week.
