(Yicai Global) Nov.16 -- Sichuan-based private telecoms firm Dr. Peng Telecom Media Group Co. [SHA:600804] plans to acquire Canadian optic fiber and cable operator Urban Communications Inc.  and Hong Kong-based communications service provider PLD Holdings Ltd. for a total USD101.49 million, the listed firm said in a filing yesterday.

Dr. Peng Telecom will buy out Urban Communications for USD11.49 million and take a 93-percent stake in PLD Holdings for USD90 million, it said.

Founded in 1988, Urban Communications provides broadband, voice, video and other services to private, public and corporate users in Vancouver and Victoria, both in British Columbia, Canada. It has built hundreds of kilometers of fiber-optic networks in downtown Vancouver.

PLD Holdings is currently working with an internet company to build a trans-Pacific underwater optical fiber cable, the first of its kind to link Hong Kong with Los Angeles. It is also set to extend to South Korea, Japan and other parts of Asia and is 80-percent complete. Construction is due to finish in the fourth quarter of next year.

Both projects will help Dr. Peng accelerate its overseas market expansion and leverage the advantages of global resources to synergize services at home and abroad, it said.
