(Yicai Global) July 27 -- The recent proliferation of driverless car development projects among Chinese tech firms has led many industry insiders to believe that driving automation will be the next big thing in China's economy.

Travel and transportation represent a huge market with enormous opportunities and challenges, and the ultimate goal of smart vehicle development is to automate driving, said Peng Jun, founder and chief executive of driving automation startup Pony.ai, in a recent interview with people.com.cn.

The company was founded late last year with the mission of "revolutionizing people's travel experience by creating safe, reliable and affordable driverless cars." Pony.ai has a team of specialists who have many years of experience with automated car development in Silicon Valley, he said, adding the firm has developed its first-generation driving automation platform and started daily road tests.

"We'll expand applications of our technology through cooperation with China's carmakers, hardware manufacturers, marketing partners and regulators, and create a healthy ecosystem for the domestic autonomous car market, enabling all parties to benefit from the booming driverless vehicle business," he explained.

Regarding technology commercialization, he added, driverless cars will mainly be used in industrial parks or as airport shuttle buses, cleaning trolleys or as farming vehicles during the initial stage.
