(Yicai Global) Sept. 29 – Chinese citizens across 11 Chinese cities are now able to take public buses by scanning QR codes using Tencent Holdings Ltd.'s [HKG:0700] third-party payment service WeChat Pay, online news outlet TechWeb reported on Sept. 29.

The system allows users to make offline payments for bus fares using the platform in 11 cities including Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Qingdao.

Passengers may also take the bus first and make payments later without the need to top-up.

China's tech giants are increasingly looking to make payment for transportation more convenient as they face increasingly fierce competition in the market.
