BBC Studios' Ex-China GM Takes VP Job at Baidu Video Platform iQiyi BBC Studios' Ex-China GM Takes VP Job at Baidu Video Platform iQiyi

(Yicai Global) Jan. 3 -- Kelvin Yau, former general manager of BBC Studios China business, has joined Beijing-based video platform iQiyi, which is the online video unit of tech giant Baidu, as vice president of its overseas business division and general manager for Thailand and will steer the company's strategy, operations and development in the Southeast Asian nation, iQiyi announced yesterday, China Business Journal reported today.

Yau began work at BBC Studios in 2015, overseeing its Chinese channel operations, content distribution, local production, joint distribution and brand development and licensing in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. He served at the Economist Group and Euromoney Legal Media Group before joining BBC Studios.

iQiyi announced its internationalization strategy on Nov. 6 and released its app targeting the global market. The mini program's first key operating area is Southeast Asia. iQiyi has concluded strategic cooperation with Malaysian media Astro to conduct its localization operations there.

Southeast Asia is the world's fastest growing region in internet and its fourth-largest internet market, per a report Chinese consulting firm DotC United Group issued in September, which concluded Southeast Asia has a maturing business pattern and inherent advantages in its demographic dividend and emerging markets and is thus becoming the destination of choice for many Chinese app developers to grow their overseas business.

Formed in 2010, iQiyi had 454.5 million mobile monthly active users last year, per information on its website.
