(Yicai) April 12 -- Chinese telecoms giant Huawei Technologies said it has started using artificial intelligence features enhanced by its Pangu models on new personal computers.

Huawei debuted the MateBook X Pro laptop at a press conference yesterday. This will be its first PC to use Pangu models, which can generate "AI summaries," said Richard Yu, chief executive of the Shenzhen-based firm's consumer business group.

In office or learning scenarios, users can create meeting minutes or audio recordings on their PCs and summarise them using Pangu, Huawei pointed out.

Pangu is Huawei's large model series, including basic models such as large language and vision models and large models with industry attributes in finance, manufacturing, and drug molecules. It also provides model services in scenario development.

The AI capabilities of Pangu models were mainly used industrially, and applying them to a PC will be an important step for Huawei to explore consumer AI, an insider from the firm told Yicai.

In addition to Pangu, Huawei said over 100 domestic mainstream large models are compatible with its PCs, including Baidu's Ernie Bot, iFlytek's SparkDest, and Tsinghua University's ChatGLM.

PCs are important productivity tools and will be most significantly impacted by AI, Ye Maosheng, an analyst at market research firm Canalys, told Yicai.

Chip manufacturers, including Intel, Nvidia, and Qualcomm, as well as PC makers such as Microsoft, Apple, and Lenovo, have launched AI PC-related products. Software developers like Adobe, AutoDesk, and domestic companies Tencent Holdings and Alibaba Group, are also preparing for AI PCs, Yicai learned.

Around 48 million AI PCs will likely be shipped worldwide this year, or 18 percent of total shipments, according to Canalys. The number will exceed 100 million next year and reach 205 million by 2028.

However, the priority must be solving information collection and privacy protection concerns with AI PCs, Ye pointed out.
