(Yicai Global) Jan. 25 -- Chinese telecoms giant Huawei Technologies has initiated three research projects with an aim to upgrade its wearables with blood pressure, body temperature, and coronary heart disease monitoring this year.

The company is looking to equip its wearables with the new features during this year, and the products are expected to be the Huawei Watch 3 or Huawei Watch GT 3 series, the Shenzhen-based firm said during its annual fan meeting on Jan. 23.

The tech firm started studying health monitoring many years ago and has built three sports health labs in Shenzhen, Xi'an, and Dongguan.

"Huawei is reaching research cooperation with several institutions to explore innovative and active health management of blood pressure from screening to early intervention," said He Gang, president of the company's mobile phone product line.

The Huawei Health application has over 200 million registered users globally, covering more than 170 countries around the world, said He. The platform has more than 60 million monthly active users, He added.

In the third quarter of last year, China sold 32.9 million wearable devices, an increase of 15.3 percent from a year ago, according to IDC. Huawei shipped over 9.4 million units during that time period, rising by almost 61 percent, ranking first with a 28.6 percent global market share.
