(Yicai Global) Jan. 15 -- South Korean auto giant Hyundai Motor Group plans to build its first overseas fuel cell production plant in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.

The facility will make the fuel cell system for Hyundai’s hydrogen-powered Nexo, with an initial annual capacity of 6,500 units, the Seoul-based company said in a statement today. The automaker, which has signed a deal with the city government to set up a wholly owned unit to run the project, provided no investment figures.

Hyundai is expanding its fuel cell production and seeking to raise its annual global fuel cell capacity to 700,000 units by 2030.

Slated to break ground at the end of next month, the plant will start mass production by the second half of next year.
