(Yicai Global) June 10 -- Maerkang, located high up in the foothills of the Himalayas in southwestern Sichuan province, was rocked by a magnitude 6 earthquake this morning. No casualties have been reported so far.
The Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, of which Maerkang is the capital, is very earthquake prone. On June 1, Lushan city, located around 440 kilometers southeast of Maerkang, was hit by a 6.1-magnitude quake. And the epicenter of the magnitude 8 Wenchuan earthquake that devastated the area in 2008 is just 180 kilometers away.
Rescue workers are already on the scene, helping to relocate residents and to clear up the debris.
