LG Display Kicks Off Mass Production at First Big OLED Screen Plant Abroad LG Display Kicks Off Mass Production at First Big OLED Screen Plant Abroad

(Yicai Global) July 24 -- LG Display, maker of the world's biggest organic light-emitting diode displays, has started mass-producing such large screens at its first manufacturing base outside South Korea in southern China's Guangzhou.

With the new plant, LG Display expects to double its global output of 8.5-generation OLED displays to 130,000 units every month, which should ease the tight global supply of such high-end panel displays, the Seoul-headquartered company told Yicai Global.

This year, the world's OLED panel shipments should exceed last year's 3.4 million units, approaching 5 million, AVC Revo Deputy Director Bian Zheng told Yicai Global. But in the first half, the tally was only 1.4 million due to the pandemic, Bian added. Sigmaintell has predicted the number to be 4 million this year and rise to 6.4 million next year.

The world should see more diversified OLED panel displays in the future due to LG Display's Guangzhou plant, said Liu Jiansheng, senior analyst at Sigmaintell.

The products of the South Korean firm's third production line in Guangzhou will mainly be used in 4K ultra-high-definition TVs. The monthly output could be raised to as high as 90,000 units from 60,000.

LG Display broke ground on the facility in July 2017 with a total investment of CNY46 billion (USD6.6 billion). Guangzhou High-Tech Zone Science and Technology Holding Group has a 30 percent stake in the project.
