(Yicai Global) June 6 -- Multinational firms such as cosmetics group L'Oreal and electric carmaker Tesla are restoring production amid an anticipated jump in consumption after Shanghai's two-month lockdown ended.

"Shanghai is now at a critical stage to fully recover business and production, and we are confident about the recovery of consumption in the city," Fabrice Megarbane, chief executive of L'Oreal China, said in an interview with Yicai Global. The French cosmetics manufacturer is hoping that consumption can bring vitality to the development of the market economy, he added.

Several L'Oreal outlets have reopened in the eastern city. L'Oreal is preparing for the next shopping festival, 618, celebrated in less than two weeks. Retail staff is returning to work, serving clients offline and online, according to the company.

L'Oreal’s plants in eastern China's Suzhou and Hubei province's Yichang have remained operational during the latest Covid-19 outbreaks even though their output dropped in April and recovered to a reasonable level late last month.

American electric vehicle maker Tesla has changed its production schedule in Shanghai as from May 23 employees work two shifts instead of one in order to improve output to pre-pandemic levels and to deliver piled-up orders, Yicai Global learned. Meanwhile, logistics have largely returned to normal.

Demand is picking up. Some Tesla stores have reopened since June 1, attracting many potential clients. A salesman said to Yicai Global that he can now sell two to three vehicles a day.

High-tech manufacturing is resuming. American-Swiss sensor maker TE Connectivity has restarted production, research and development, as well as delivery in Shanghai, Zhang Chao, general manager of TE China, said to Yicai Global. The Schaffhausen-headquartered firm's distribution center in the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone has restored full capacity as of June 1.
