Mainlander Visits to Hong Kong Rose 14 Percent Over Spring Festival Mainlander Visits to Hong Kong Rose 14 Percent Over Spring Festival

(Yicai Global) Feb. 22 -- Over 520,000 tourists from China's mainland visited Hong Kong in the first four days of Spring Festival (Feb. 15 to Feb. 18) for 14-percent annual growth, Hong Kong's government announced.

Sightseeing peaked Feb. 17 and Feb. 18, state Xinhua news agency reported yesterday, with over 160,000 and 180,000 mainlanders entering the region those two days. Global visitors also climbed 2.5 percent as the total tally of tourists to Hong Kong tipped at 650,000 from Feb. 15 to Feb. 18. A thriving mainland economy has steadily boosted that figure for four or five months.

Sang Sang Holdings International Ltd.'s turnover scaled up more than 10 percent this Spring Festival over last year, beating the 5 percent to 6 percent foreseen, said Liu Kebin, the Hong Kong jeweler's operations director.

Shoppers rank likewise swelled 6 percent to 7 percent on last year, Liu said. Burgeoning travel by China's newly-affluent make these numbers likely to only keep going up in future.
