(Yicai) May 19 -- Mariah Carey's two Shanghai shows attracted thousands of Chinese and overseas fans, significantly boosting overall consumption in the city.
Fans from Europe, the United States, South Africa, and other areas, as well as from all across China, came to Shanghai to see Mariah Carey perform at the Hongkou Stadium on May 16 and 17. The shows were part of the singer's The Celebration of Mimi tour, celebrating the 20th anniversary of her The Emancipation of Mimi album.
The Mariah Carey concerts also used China's stub promotion strategy, which combines a ticket-linked discount model for designated merchants, integrating resources of upstream and downstream firms, including organizers, ticketing platforms, online platforms, commercial entities, catering, and accommodation to stimulate consumption.
"The tourism market has deeply integrated with cultural and entertainment performances and sporting events," said Zhao Huanyan, a senior tourism and cultural industry analyst and senior economist. "Performances and events with international IP, including these Mariah Carey concerts, the F1 race, and the recent international equestrian competitions, attract many domestic and foreign tourists."
Shanghai can host big performances and events, boasting professional venues, equipment, convenient transportation, accommodation and catering services, and professional personnel, Zhao noted.
Around 57,000 commercial performances were held in Shanghai last year, attracting 25.45 million viewers and bringing CNY5.2 billion (USD721.3 million) of revenue, with the three figures reaching record highs and leading Chinese cities. Shanghai also hosted the most concerts, attracting more than 3.59 million spectators, with 65 percent coming from outside the city.
