(Yicai Global) May 18 -- A number of international fast-food chains, including McDonald’s and Domino’s Pizza, have started up again in Shanghai mainly for online and group orders.
McDonald’s has reopened nearly 120 eateries across the city’s 16 districts and mainly provides meals to Covid front-line workers and group buyers. Orders can be placed via its mobile app or online food delivery platforms Meituan and Ele.me. McDonald’s also said it will speed up the reopening of more restaurants and make more channels and products available.
Domino’s restarted work at over 40 percent of its Shanghai outlets and offers special set meals, with a selection of pizzas, snacks, and drinks, through community buying. Its restaurant in Jinshan district has applied to start welcoming back diners, and those in other districts will follow suit.
Other foreign fast-food caterers such as Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut have also been offering community-buying services during lockdown.
Logistical supplies also have been resuming. The delivery hub of Jiading district of Xiahui Supply Chain, which serves McDonald’s, was among the first essential supply chain businesses approved to restart after lockdown started. It shipped 350,000 packages to McDonald’s restaurants in 3,804 deliveries from March 13 to May 16.
Some of Domino’s backup suppliers are from Shanghai and the surrounding areas. Their operations are in the process of rebooting, as the impact of Covid-19 is now limited. Both McDonald’s and Domino’s hope that the lockdown can end as soon as possible, so that more employees can join their teams to offer more support.
