New NEVs From FAW, Byton and Great Wall Make an Impression in Frankfurt New NEVs From FAW, Byton and Great Wall Make an Impression in Frankfurt

(Yicai Global) Sept. 12 -- Chinese electric automakers including FAW Group, Byton and Great Wall Motors are making waves at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show with their cutting-edge new energy vehicles, capitalizing on stringent regulations in the European car market to reduce emissions, Reuters reported yesterday.

China's innovations in fifth-generation mobile networks, artificial intelligence and new energy give it a strong advantage and are allowing it to overtake the traditional big carmakers in Germany and Japan, Great Wall Chairman Wei Jianjun said.

FAW Group made a splash, unveiling new concept cars from its iconic luxury brand Hongqi, the S9 hypercar, and an all-electric sport utility vehicle with a Rolls Royce-like appearance, the E115. The last time that Hongqi participated in an international motor show was in Leipzig in 1960.

NEV startup Byton showed off its first all-electric offering, the M-Byte. The Nanjing-based firm has already received 50,000 orders for the car, 20,000 of which are from Europe, Chief Executive Daniel Kirchert said. A C-round of financing worth about USD500 million is soon to be completed. The funds will be used to mass produce the M-Byte.

Great Wall showcased two new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, the VV7 PHEV and VV7 GT PHEV, part of its high-end brand WEY. The Baoding, Hebei province-based firm plans to enter the European Union market in two years' time, Wei said.

This year, the number of Chinese participants increased to 79 from 73 in 2017, making it the biggest foreign contingent at the show, Reuters reported. Great Wall Motors brought along several of its subsidiary auto parts makers, Hycet Technology, Svolt Energy Technology, Nobo Automotive and Mind Electronic Appliances, to Frankfurt for the first time.
