(Yicai Global) July 30 -- Shanghai Exhibition Center is gearing up to host the 2018 Shanghai Book Fair as part of Shanghai International Literary Week from Aug. 15 through Aug. 21, and hopes to have a Nobel Prize winner in attendance.
The list of special guests is yet to be determined, Xu Jiong, head of the Shanghai Municipal Press and Publication Bureau, said at a press conference on July 25. There will reportedly be 37 Chinese and foreign writers attending.
The event, which has been held every year since 2004, will again be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day and house nearly 8,000 types of book worth a total CNY8 million (USD1.2 million), Xu said. China Publishing Group, along with its 23 publishers, will partake in the event and host more than 80 activities.
China International Publishing Group will arrange for China International Book Trading and its seven subsidiary publishers to attend the exhibition with 5,000 book varieties in hand. Shanghai Century Publishing Group, academic presses and Shanghai Xinhua Media will also attend.
Given the exhibition's vast rise to popularity, it has now out-grown the host venue and organizers will be arranging 100 sub-exhibitions across Shanghai, 78 of which will take place at book stores. Visitors this year will be able to purchase their tickets online, to avoid queuing in the hot summer sun.
The book fair will also play host to a conference on innovative development of China's physical book stores. Shops across the country are recovering from poor performance, but need to focus on development supported by the market, government subsidies and tax policies, Xu said.
