(Yicai Global) May 17 -- Shanghai's local rail transit system ranked as the country's densest in terms of track length to land area in 2017.

Beijing, Shenzhen, Nanjing and Guangzhou followed the eastern metropolis, according to a report by digital mapmaker AutoNavi Software Co. There were 33 cities with 162 local transit lines spanning 4,824 kilometers, mostly made up of subway systems, and there were 35 new rail lines build nationwide throughout the year. Eight of the cities had networks spanning more than 200 kilometers, while 13 surpassed 100 kilometers, the data shows.

The total length of China's bus routes reached 632,700 kilometers, with 24 cities making up 70 percent of the total.

The report also gave out comprehensive ratings based on rail, bus and other criteria. Among major cities, Shenzhen ranked first due to its major bus coverage and accessibility and rail links. It was followed by Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing and Tianjin.

Shanghai was number one in terms of bus travel and transfer times, thanks mostly to its vast network of buses and the greater demand for cross-district travel.
