(Yicai Global) Feb. 18 -- Shanghai’s major retailers sold more than twice as many goods over the Lunar New Year holiday from the same period last year and the number of tourists stayed roughly the same, according to the municipal government.

Some 390 key companies achieved sales of CNY7.61 billion (USD1.2 billion) over the break which ran from Feb. 11 to Feb. 17 inclusive, state broadcaster CCTV reported today, citing the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce.

There were 4,921,600 tourists, of which Shanghai residents accounted for 81 percent. Their spending came to almost CNY5.7 billion (USD881 million).

Hotels had an average room occupancy rate of 90 percent, the same as in 2019, according to the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism.

Over six million tourists visited the city’s 170 major tourist attractions during the holiday, up 30 percent from the same period in 2019. Its landmark Bund promenade had 1,137,900 visitors, the Lujiazui financial district 1,068,300 and the classic Yu Garden 370,300.

The municipality planned tour routes to 600 scenic spots and cultural attractions across the city, including theaters and performance groups, museums and art galleries. Online cultural tourism activities attracted 125,130,000 views.
