Shinkansen to Replace Substandard Products of Kobe Steel in One Year Shinkansen to Replace Substandard Products of Kobe Steel in One Year

(Yicai Global) Oct. 23 -- Parts produced by Kobe Steel Ltd. [TYO:5406] used on its Shinkansen bullet trains failed to meet Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), East Japan Railway Company recently claimed, as Japanese media reported Oct. 21.

Bogies in its Tohoku Shinkansen and Akita Shinkansen bullet trains were installed with aluminum parts whose data had been falsified, per the report.

The company inspected axle sleeves purchased from Kobe Steel over the past ten years and found some used in the Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train E5 were lower than the industrial standard in strength and corrosion resistance.

The company said that it will replace these problematic products within about one year.
