Tencent, China Unicom to Set Up Big Data Lab to Fight Telecom Fraud Tencent, China Unicom to Set Up Big Data Lab to Fight Telecom Fraud

(Yicai Global) Jan. 15 -- Chinese technology giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. will link up with China United Network Communications Ltd., one of the country's three leading mobile phone carriers, to establish up a Big Data laboratory aimed at improving telecommunications security and combating financial fraud, online media outlet The Paper reported today.

The Shenzhen-based company will work with the telecom carrier, better known as China Unicom, to undertake studies focused on cross-platform data exchange, data analysis capabilities, network security technology and the development of new products to detect financial scams.

The two parties first started work together in November 2016, with Tencent later becoming one of China Unicom's major shareholders following its mixed-ownership reform. The enterprise holds a 5.33 percent stake in the telecom operator.

The pair previously collaborated on the development of an anti-fraud system, called Eagle's Eye, leveraging the carrier's communication monitoring capabilities and Tencent's network security expertise.
