Tencent, Emperor Tech Look to Make Public Transport Payments Easier Tencent, Emperor Tech Look to Make Public Transport Payments Easier

(Yicai Global) June 27 -- Tencent Holdings, which runs one of China's most popular mobile payment apps, plans to promote its public transport platform by using digital identity authentication systems developed by Emperor Technology.

Two Tencent subsidiaries agreed to integrate the tech titan's QR codes for payments with Emperor's ID authentication technology, Shenzhen-based Emperor said in a statement yesterday. The trio plan to promote Tencent Passenger Ride Code nationwide to make public transport more convenient and explore new potential applications.

Mobile payments for public transport are a hot spot for apps like Tencent's WeChat Pay and rival Alibaba's Alipay, which hope to glean vast amounts of data from the millions of trips made every single day to extend their already 90 percent share of the payments market. Tencent already operates such services for public transport networks in over 60 Chinese cities, including its largest, Shanghai, after tapping the metropolis's subway in May and bus network earlier this month.

The three firms will also pair up to develop biometric authentication standards and a unified verification platform; explore big data, cloud computing and credit ratings; and research the integration of biometric and digital identity authentication.
